The Annunciation

Fra Angelico · c. 1425–1426
Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid

Fra Angelico's Annunciation, with Adam and Eve leaving Eden as Gabriel greets the Virgin Mary.
Fra Angelico, The Annunciation. Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid.

In one extraordinary painting, Fra Angelico brings together two defining moments in salvation history: humanity’s fall and the beginning of its redemption.

Where Eve’s disobedience brought sin into the world, Mary’s obedience welcomes the Savior.

Sacred Symbolism

Adam and Eve. On the left, our first parents leave Paradise. Their sorrow contrasts with Mary’s peaceful acceptance of God’s will.

The Garden. The lush vegetation recalls Eden, the Paradise lost through sin and restored through Christ.

The Divine Light. Golden rays descend toward Mary, carrying the dove of the Holy Spirit. The mystery of the Incarnation unfolds before our eyes.

Mary’s Crossed Hands. Her gesture expresses humility, reverence, and willing acceptance of God’s message.

The Open Book. Resting upon Mary’s lap, it evokes her contemplation of Sacred Scripture and the fulfillment of God’s promises.

Visio Divina

From the Fall to Redemption

Begin with the garden.

See Adam and Eve departing Paradise. Then allow your gaze to move toward Mary.

In her stillness, something extraordinary is taking place.

The promise of redemption is becoming reality.

“Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.”
— Luke 1:38

Remain with Mary’s quiet acceptance.

Consider how a single act of trust can open the heart to God’s grace.

What is God inviting you to receive with trust?
