The Mystical Nativity Sandro Botticelli
The Mystical Nativity
Sandro Botticelli · c. 1500–1501
National Gallery, London
Botticelli’s Mystical Nativity is unlike almost any other depiction of Christ’s birth. Painted around 1500, during a period of religious upheaval in Florence, it presents Bethlehem as the beginning of a great spiritual victory.
At the center, the newborn Jesus lies upon the earth as Mary kneels in adoration. Joseph rests nearby. Above the humble shelter, twelve angels dance in a circle, carrying olive branches and crowns. Their celebration recalls the joy of heaven at the coming of the Savior.
When Heaven Rejoices
In the foreground, angels embrace human figures. Olive branches, traditionally associated with peace, accompany these extraordinary gestures of reconciliation. Nearby, small demons flee into crevices in the earth.
Botticelli’s imagery reflects the promise of peace and the defeat of evil through Jesus Christ. His Greek inscription above the painting refers to the troubled times in which he lived and draws upon the apocalyptic imagery of Revelation. The work is both a Nativity and a vision of the triumph of Christ.
Yet the source of all this heavenly celebration is astonishingly humble: a newborn child lying beneath a makeshift shelter.
Visio Divina · Welcomed at Bethlehem
Look at the lower right foreground. See the kneeling figure dressed in red, embraced by an angel.
Imagine that you are this person. You have come to Bethlehem to see the newborn Christ. An angel kneels beside you and embraces you with joy.
Look toward the Child lying before Mary. You are witnessing the birth of the Savior, and you are personally welcomed into the joy of His coming.
Remain here for a moment. The Son of God has entered the world for your salvation. The joy surrounding you begins with Him.
Lord Jesus, You came into the world to reconcile us to the Father. Open my heart to receive the peace You came to give. Amen.
