The Annunciation captures the sacred moment when the Archangel Gabriel announces to the Virgin Mary that she will become the Mother of God.

With Mary’s humble acceptance, the mystery of the Incarnation unfolds: the Word becomes flesh.

Sacred Symbolism

Jan van Eyck fills this extraordinary moment with intricate details, each inviting us to look more closely and contemplate its spiritual meaning.

The Lilies. The white lilies beside Mary symbolize her purity and perpetual virginity.

The Seven Rays of Light. Descending toward Mary, they signify the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit. The dove represents the Holy Spirit overshadowing her.

Mary’s Words. Ecce ancilla Domini — “Behold the handmaid of the Lord.” Her response is painted upside down, directed toward heaven, as though God Himself were reading her words.

The Ancient Architecture. Biblical scenes embedded in the floor and walls connect the Old Testament to the New. God’s ancient promises find their fulfillment in Christ.

The Divine Light. Light enters through the church windows, illuminating the moment when the eternal Son of God enters human history.

Visio Divina

Contemplating the Annunciation

Rest your eyes upon Mary.

Notice her stillness, her humility, and her open hands.

The Archangel Gabriel has delivered a message that will change the course of human history. Yet Mary responds with quiet trust.

“Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.”
— Luke 1:38

Remain with the painting for a few moments.

Consider the beauty of surrendering to God’s will.

What might Mary’s trust teach you about your own response to God?
